Good evening, white people.

Mobile, thus far, has been a fascinating and enjoyable study in what happens at the crossroads of civilization.

Some historical background: six flags have flown over Mobile in its colonial history (Spanish pre-conquistador outpost, first capital of French Louisiana, British loyalist refuge, Spanish again, American during the War of 1812, the Republic of Alabama, the Confederacy, America again... and that doesn't count the Republic of West Florida). Historical homes have shields featuring these flags (yes, including that one). As such (and also by being a port city), it is an interesting blend of a variety of cultures.

Yesterday evening my lovely wife, some friends, and I went to see a prominent New Orleans musician at a local club. Given the club's location, it was obvious to us that we would very much be in the racial minority of the attendees. When we arrived, this was confirmed - the owners were almost surprised that we had showed up.

"Wow... you're here for the show this evening?"
"Yes."
"Oh."
"We used to live in New Orleans."
"Oh. Ohhhhhh. The cover's $20. Would you like a table up front?"

Envision an old Golden Corral converted into a retro-style supper club, complete with stage and awesome brass band. When the emcee strode up stage, we were appropriately greeted.

"Good evening, everyone. Hey, good evening, white people."

I haven't had that good of a time in a while. Racial divisions are alive and well in the deep South, but a lot of us (regardless of race) like to have fun at their expense.

NIIIIIIICE.

I was thinking of sending you the bumper sticker that came with my "I Often Enjoy Making Light Of My Chemical Dependency On Caffeine" mug from the Onion.

It says "MY VOTE Cancels Out Y'alls."

You may want to make sure you have that shotgun first.

hahahahaha, I love it.

Also, if you require a shotgun, meet us up in the Ham over Thanksgiving weekend and I will gladly give you all of Stagger Lee's. (Hi honey!)

I also love that they were very concerned with us having a good time. Seriously, it was like Commander's level of service.

Curious -- what kind of music?

Vince - it was a well-known jazz band, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue. Those guys are awesome.

OK, this is what I get for not revisiting the comment page. You got to see Trombone Shorty at the Golden Corral? Daaaaaaamn, yo.

Indeed we did. He and his bandmates are all great guys. Pre-show some of us stood around and watched the Auburn-Mississippi State fiasco, and then they belted out the strongest jazz set I've seen in a while. Ah, the dichotomy of Mobile.
